Among his aims was to interpret the music of truly “classic” originators of the 20s & ‘30s jazz. It featured top-flight soloists and talented arrangers and quickly won a loyal following among northwest jazz aficionados. Unfortunately, its breakup was inevitable after loosing its steady weekly gig at a tavern in old Ballard.
In recent years our PSTJS has been able to bring the band together for an annual showcase of “what used to be.” That’s what comes up Sunday, November 21st, a pre-Thanksgiving treat for our members and guests. Jacobus, who now holds down the trombone chair in Bert Barr’s “Uptown Low down” band, will switch to his tuba and string bass role with the re-constituted Evergreen combo. Its familiar lineup includes Dave Loomis (trombone & vocals); Steve Wright (trumpet & reeds); Craig Flory (clarinet & sax); Dan Grinstead (piano); Jeff Woistman (banjo); and Mike Daugherty (drums).
Evergreen is one of the few bands on the trad. jazz circuit that plays the music originated by the small group led by clarinet legend Jimmie Noone in 1920s Chicago, but also features a wide spectrum of familiar and semi-obscure tunes in its “book.” They get together these days only when booked to entertain once yearly at a PSTJS concert. Hey -- how fortunate can we get?
