June 20

Hume Street

The Hume Street Preservation Jazz Band originated in Aberdeen a couple of decades ago, but now the eight-piece combo features musicians from all over the Northwest. They come together for performances from home bases such as Kalispell MT, Gold Bar and Bellevue WA as well as Grays Harbor area communities.

Hume Street got a real shot in the arm with the fairly recent addition to the band of talented cornetist-arranger Steve Wright. He joined with old hands Rob Hilliard (leader & reeds); Andy Hall (tuba & vocals); Karla West (piano); and George Oelrich (second cornet) to give the group a polished ensemble sound to go with its always-solid “jazz feel.” Wright came to Hume Street with a distinguished resume' of playing and arranging for years with the Paramount (Boston) and Evergreen Classic (Seattle) jazz bands.

The Hume Street bunch offers familiar and not-so-familiar tunes from an extensive “book” of early-day New Orleans-based jazz, plus hard-driving Chicago style numbers, pop ballads aimed at dancer-friendly tastes and swing classics from the mid-20th century.

The June 20th concert wraps up the Puget Sound Traditional Jazz Society's spring season. July and August are “dark months” for the club's concert series, which will resume once more in September.
